You can use a multi protocol IM client. I use Adium on my mac and it works great for just about all IM clients (including MSN).
If by quality programs he means nerdy games and Powerpoint. Just try running Pro Tools 7 on a PC. Now that's a quality program. What an idiot.

You can download a Mac version of WLM.
Apple computers are to slow to handle any of the quality programs that are run on PC.
