the simplest most straightforward way is to use a crossover cable (ethernet) and plug an end in to each pc's ethernet (network) port.

You could also use a hub - each pc would connect from it's ethernet port to one of the hub's port with a regular ethernet cable - cat5e.

Outlook was a solution in the past to store tons of emails in the past- you have gmail now, which makes your stockpile of emails like a small network with a search engine. Outlook(at least for my gmail account) stores emails on your computer, which means that any mail deleted in outlook is not deleted in your gmail account. Outlook is a email downloader and sender, that's all. If you want to delete emails in your email account you probably have to log in to the email webpage to do so.

For gmail,

1) Create a profile("gmail" for example).

2) Set incoming and outgoing "addresses"

3) Set ports for the incoming and outgoing mail. Probably for your firewall or the server to identify recieving/sending email requests.

I am working on my website for my business, and using Yahoo Sitebuilder. Being that it is for an antique shop and a Bed and Breakfast, I wanted to use a font that goes well with the theme, so I choose the Isabella font.

However, I checked my website from my laptop, and the font changes from Isabella to what looks like Times New Roman. My mother's computer shows the same thing. However, the computer that I used to build the site, shows the Isabella font with no problems.

When the font shows Times new Roman, some of the features on the pages are distorted. I'd like to have this site so that everyone sees the same thing.

If you have Nero, you can do this. Just go to backup, and select backup an entire hard drive. You can burn this to cd(s) or dvd(s) and boot from them to get back to the state at which you made the backup. This is great if you are like me and alter all your windows settings and processes and install alot of software. If you have a SATA hard drive though, instead of IDE, you will run into complications because the cd won't run drivers for that type of drive when booting.

Not sure if that will work, what I do know is that most PC vendors will send you restore disks for a nominal fee ($10-$20 US). The tag with CD key should be on the box. You might also want to mention what you do and see if they have any special deals (i.e. free CD's) for charities.

One set of CD's should work on more than one computer too, so you shouldn't need a new set for each PC. Of course what would be nicest is to get your hands on a set of OS cd's (not the restore ones) and used the keys off the PC case for those, that way you would just need one for each OS you deal with.

It should not have any effect on the computer. However, you should only register it once I believe. I'm not entirely sure on this topic but however, the first cd key you activate will be the registered one. Using this key multiple times shouldn't affect the use of it.

The best thing you can do is use the disk you have at the moment, this will not be an OEM copy as you would have bought it with your moms PC.

My music is a mix of iTunes downloads, CDs I own, and CDs I have borrowed and no longer own (physical CD). Every time I have transfered my library between computers, I seem to loose music. ITunes is just a program that plays music files on the computer and puts it into one interface (aka ITunes) where you can access it. If you move the actual files on your computer, ITunes will not know what happened to the files. I would suggest copying all your music to the new PC if you want to access it from there, do not move it. The exclamation mark you are getting means that ITunes the program cannot find where the music is located because it has been moved.

You can share your music from your old PC so that your new PC can access it (home network). That PC must be on in order for your new PC to access it though. Your probably better off moving/copying the music to your new computer. Copying your music to the new computer provides a backup of your music on your old PC incase you have a hard drive failure. Any new music you add will not be there though.
If you have a network, you may want to put the files in a shared folder on the network and then put them back on ITunes on your other computer.

If that doesn't work, you may want to try to use a flash drive to see if you can transfer them that way.

Yes, you can play multiplayer on an ad-hoc network.

You need to follow these steps to set up a home ad-hoc network (Note: This is overly complex to make sure *nothing* goes wrong, you can usually skip step 2)

1) Make sure you're using a crossover Ethernet cable to connect both PCs. Ask at a cable shop to make sure.

2) Assuming you're on windows (XP?), the first step you should do is assign IP addresses to both PCs. This is done by:

(iii) Click properties, Select TCP/IP from the menu, click properties.

(iv) Select "Use the following IP address".

(v) Under IP address, enter a unique number, eg 10.10.10.1

Hi all, I am using cable modem connected through USB to the server, and the server is connected through hub to the 5 other client computers. I can access mail and messenger from the server, but not from the client (other website n yahoo services can be accessed from the client). but only the server that can connect to yahoo mail and messenger.

I am using winroute as a router (with DHCP server) and zonealarm as a firewall.

In the router software itself (usually 192.168.0.100) you can limit traffic on the LAN side. This is very much specific to your router, you may need to go to D-Link's website for the actually buttons, but this is the basic path.

Pick the IP addresses you want to block, choose 'block all ports' and for the type of traffic, choose TCP/IP.

After this, those IP addresses will be able to share information but not access the internet.

Yes, they can be retrieved. But that is only if you want them to recover the photos. It requires some forensic work with file fragments left when deleted. It's unlikely that your carrier will bother with image recovery unless you're trying to get lost info back. If so, anything could be found.

The only way possible is if you had some sort of tracking software on them and somebody connects them to the internet. A lot of the time these computer land up being sold to local pawn stores, so visit the local pawn shops and talk to the manager about the situation .... and ask them to call the police if somebody shows up with 6 machines for sale. They don't want to knowingly buy stollen goods so they may be helpful.. Good luck!

if it was just the PS3 online it would be 100% connection (no lag at all)

You really do not want to get yourself into this. There is software for this but you need a computer and a programming degree to use it. Everyone I have ever known to try this has had a minor network problem lose ALL the data off the system. It only seems to work in totally almost clinically controlled environments.

Absolutely not- the lead in the solder of computer boards can leach into groundwater, and any mercury in batteries is beaucoup bad as well.

There are many used computer shops that will either accept them for recycling (and part them out in the process to pay for it) at no fee or a nominal charge for some of the monitors (these tend to be the hardest to get rid of). Call around.

Try calling a local recycling center. We have a dead monitor that we didn't want to toss in a landfill. We called the local scrap metal recycling center in our area, and they said that they would take it for free. Now the big question is where to take all of the CFLs in a few years when they start burning out!

When schools blocked the word "gun" on school computers, they don't aim at reducing violence. They are simply reducing the exposure of students to words that they shouldn't be using at school, home, work, etc. However, the schools are fully aware of the current school shooting threat and are trying to reduce the risk, even though they know that filtering these words on school computers will have little effect on a student body.

As for the violation of the first amendment, schools are NOT violating it due to the fact that the computer(s) is owned by them so they have administrative rights to that computer(s), almost allowing them to ignore laws like the first amendment .

First, the reason computers have been getting faster is that living organisms (people) have been working hard at it.

Second, no one could figure out a way to do anything better by combining them. It's not a good division of labor. Computer designers are accustomed to determinism and reliability. We've done best by letting the humans do what they do best, and letting the computers do what they do best.

We do use computer chips as biological sensors. We do use computers to help control prosthetics. But no attempt to integrate living organism to augment computers has succeeded. If some people are still trying to do it, they are understandably not saying much.

well remember to set your settings so that your computer doesn't sleep or turn off after a period of time, and also, i would turn off the monitor. Turn off all the save electricity settings, because they will stop the download. also, i would get a download manager like megamanager ( http://www.megaupload.com/megamanager/ ) so if it stops downloading, you won't lose all of your progress.

it has hiragana and english letters on it. if you are typing in hiragana and press space bar it will change it to katakana or kanji, if you pressit again will bring up a list of character choices. pressing enter will let you move on.

As for writing the kanji, you just turn on hiragana. You will type in romaji, the computer will turn it into hiragana. Once you finish the word, press the spacebar and the computer will transform the kana into kanji. However, there are different yomi for kanji, and a lot of kanji share yomi, so make sure you have the right kanji. Generally, the program is smart enough to pick it up.

I don't know about the older versions, but for vista the IME Pad lets you draw the kanji to get the yomi in kana. It's a very simple tool that has simplified typing in Japanese. Check it out.
Japanese computer keyboard is the same as any other ones with alphabets and numbers. Japanese uses one other way of writing charactors call, "Roma-ji". It uses English alphabets, like ABC. If you want to write Kanji, you simply type whatever the word you want to write with Roma-Ji and hit space bar, then the computer will give you the options of Kanji charactors or in Hiragana and you pick the right one from it. For example, if you want to write Tokyo in Kanji or Hiragana, you just need to type Tokyo in Roma-ji and hit space bar. If yo want to type "Book" in Kanji or Hiragana, you type Hon(It's the Japanese word for Book). Of course, you need to know how to read the Japanese word and which one is the right one, on top of that, you need the Japanese language software such as, Ichitaro installed on your computer. There are a huge variety of Linux distributions out there. Most of them are general OS, suitable for desktops, workstations and servers. Examples are Debian, Fedora Core, SuSE, RedHat, Ubuntu, Slackware, Gentoo etc.

Determining the best out of them is a difficult job. I would prefer Debian, because of its sheer size ( debian etch is 23 CDs..), stability, support and usability. Its available for almost all the architectures around.

Suse is the best for newbies. They go for userfriendliness and eyecandiness. Nice looks it has got. People migrating from windows shall find this more easy to use than most of the distros around. But i would suggest people to try other distros as well.

Do you have to run the Cat-5 cable? Is it going to be a easy run? Will you have to set up a server on the network also? What about printers will they be networked or shared? Will you have to set up a program like Retrospect to do back-ups each night/week? will you have to give tech support for the network after it is done? All of these questions should be answered before you think about giving a quote. This is why most people charge per hour. If i was going to do this I would break it up into two or three areas and charge different prices for each thing. ie if it is a hard run on the Cat 5 it would cost more then if it was as easy as just running them across the floor. Older electronic equipment can have lead in the solder that holds components to the circuit boards. I doubt if there is any mercury in there although mercury switches were used in OLD industrial equipment.

The lead levels are not high enough to worry about unless your child does this every day for a long period of time.

there are several ways to connect without network cards, you could use a laplink cable which connects through the serial ports which all pc's have, although these would be relatively short so the pc's would have to be quite close to each other.

another way would be to fit network cards in both pc's, these can be brought for around 拢10 each and you would then need a crossover cable around 拢15 from pc world depending on length (although i use a normal network cable with a crossover adapter with a total cost of 拢4.95 for the cable at 15m and 拢1.50 for the crossover adapter) .

another way is firewire cards, these recieve at quite a high speed but again you would have to buy 2 and their around 拢15 each and the cable's are pretty short.

all of these option's can be used with the network setup wizard within windows xp and millenium, and will also share internet connections aswell as files and printer sharing.

the cheapest place to go to are the local pc shop's on some side streets or you could try www.cpc.co.uk my local shop is www.sinoco.co.uk but i dont know if he offers a delivery service but your cheapest option is cat 5e network cable with cossover adapter. good luck
