Is there anything dangerous inside old electronic equipment (computers etc) that a child should not

My 5 year old went to a big event yesterday where they were letting kids destroy old electronic equipment to build things out of. The kids were smashing stuff - old computers, telephones, keyboards etc - or taking them apart with screwdrivers, and then working with them. When I got home my husband said they can be full of lead and mercury and he shouldn't have been touching them. Is this true? Is it dangerous for a child to handle pieces of old electronic equipment, and if so, which pieces specifically (curcuit boards, keyboard insides?)?

Older electronic equipment can have lead in the solder that holds components to the circuit boards. I doubt if there is any mercury in there although mercury switches were used in OLD industrial equipment.

The lead levels are not high enough to worry about unless your child does this every day for a long period of time.

Yes, they are very dangerous and your husband was right.
there may be some hazardous substances in old electronic equipment I'd be more worried about a child getting zapped by a capacitor though
