When you're using a wireless connection, you're "catching" signal at a specific frequency - in the 2.4GHz range. The more devices in range of your access point that use this same frequency, the weaker the signal will be to each individual device.

Most wireless routers are designed to "step down" to accomodate the slowest device - so if your router is 802.11G and one of your notebooks has a 802.11B interface, the router will downgrade to 802.11B. Since B and G use different modulation techniques, this could have an affect on your signal strength. Check all of your devices and make sure they are using the same 802.11x protocol as your wireless router.
The phantoms are getting in the way.
