I have a 5 yr old Dell Inspiron laptop with a fried motherboard problem. I don't want to just trash it, but don't think anyone on eBay will buy it either. What do people do with obselete or broken computers? Is there a way I can get rid of mine for profit?

If the LCD is good and everything is with it like hard drive memory ect.. Someone will buy it on e-bay and you will be suprised how much you will get out of it.

a fried motherboard is a problem, because a new one is pretty expensive. but can you tell me the type of your dell notebook ? (you can add it to your question)
i'm looking for a power module for a dell inspiron 3800 and according to the age you mentioned it could be a 3700 or a 3800.
Some dumps have an area for computers to be placed at since some people will want to use them for parts, etc. I have seen computers placed at the curb though and they get taken away with regular trash. If you visit your dump often or live near one, you can always drop off your old computer and ask them for more information on how to properly dispose of your computer.
Ebay is great, and you would be surprised as to what people will buy. You can also try your local paper...or have a garage sale.
