a wireless router would do the trick.

the linksys WRT54GX4 router has very good range.

for the computer downstairs, install a pci card to receive the wireless signal... something like the linksys WMP54GX

DON'T USE A WIRELESS ROUTER...

Use one that takes wire - it's too easy for people with wireless adapters to simply drive by, and get online using YOUR connection. But yes, a router is the easiest way to go, aside from trying to network the two computers together.
If one is upstairs and the other downstairs, the best way is to use a WiFi router. You can also use an ethernet router but then you have to hard wire them together, a bit messy but cheaper than WiFi especially if you have to put WiFi cards in both PC's. Only the older PC's will need an ethernet card. Cheaper still is a USB router, but have only read about them and dont know how effective they work, again messy hard wired.
