How to get file sharing and use of printer on both computers?

I have 2 computers (desktop with win vista home basic and laptop with win xp and netgear wireless adaptor), a cable modem, a netgear wireless router, and a printer connected to the desktop.

Yesterday, I bought the router, I set it up. Everything works perfectly. I can get on the internet on my laptop. However, How do I join both of the computers together so that I can share files and allow my laptop to use the printer connected to the desktop?

1. are you able to ping the Desktop and notebook

2. are you able to ping from the notebook to the router ..

(from xp its start run type in cmd )

(from Vista select start in the START SEARCH type in CMD then right click on the icon and select run as admin)
