I have my three computers connected to a wireless router, and they all have the Messenger Service (the one that creates the gray boxes with info) turned off. It is safe for me to turn this service back on now because I have the computers behind a router? Does being on a home network make it impossible for strangers to send me those annoying messages that I don't care about? I want to use it to send messages to people on the computers because they are at different parts of the house.

Well, that didn't work for me - even behind a router, a switch, and a firewall, those messages still got through. Very annoying!
It would be a cool utility to send messages, but you might be better off simply using an Instant Messenger, such as MSN Messenger or AIM...
