What does I/O refer to, when dealing with computers?

I am getting an I/o error in UNIX on one of my computers, and I think it's about time I understood what it was. ;)

Input / Output.

In short getting data in and out of the operating system or cpu from disk and memory.

You probably have a bad hard drive.

...

Bad disks can usually still be partially read from. They are made up of many platters and parts. It may be that only a part of the drive is dead. To know for sure use a disk verification tool, it may be able to map around the bad parts is the drive motor itself is still okay.

Reinstall the OS. You shouldn't be using UNIX, you don't even know what the error message was!
