Can I use a DSL router and a switch togather for four computers to connect internet?

I have a DSL router (Siemens SpeedStream 4200 ADSL Modem) and a switch. Siemens SpeedStream 4200 ADSL Modem has a USB and one LAN port. So I can use only two computers. Can I use switch to connect more two computers (total four) without using any server?

depending on the IP address...and the modem that you have.

It has to be a private IP address such as 192.168.X.X.

You can also purchase a router from a computer store and most routers have four ports in the back that you can hook more then two computers to.

The router is similar to a switch in regards that the dsl modem connects to it.

If your dsl modem is connecting two computers, its more then likely running a private ip address so make sure that if you do decide to get a router make sure that whatever private address that is for the gateway (router) is different, for example, 10.10.0.1.

More then likely, the dsl modem that you have is a smart modem and only allows for two ip addresses hence you would not be able to connect a switch to it.

Your best bet is to invest in a router and run it that way.

You can also keep the switch and run it from the router and have even more computers using the same dsl.

Be warned though, the more computers that you have connected, the slower the speed.
