Can I use an ethernet port hub to connect 2 computers to internet without a router?

I inadvertently bought an ethernet hub instead of a router. Can I still use it (w/o a router) to connect 2 computers to the internet? Thanks.

Yes. Just wire the internet gateway device to the hub, then wire the PC's to the subsequent ports on the hub. The hub should not cause any problems on your local network.

Not unless you own a block of public IP addresses. Each pc would need a public IP statically assigned to it.

In your case I assume you do not own a block of IPs and will need a router. What a router does is allow you to give it one IP from the modem and it does what is called NAT and gives each of your pcs on the LAN side a private IP.

Your Hub can be cascaded to the router for more cable inputs using CAT-5 wires.

See if you can exchange the Hub for a Router or better yet a Gateway/Router/Wireles device. This will alow you to connect both wired and wireless PCs to the internet without any additional devices.

Wireless, cost a bit more for each PC but it will alow you to connect from any other room in your house without having to run CAT-5 wires throught walls and such.

A Router allows you to setup DHCP Dynamic Host Control Protocol. This means that the router assigns a IP Address for each computer you connect. A Hub cannot do this so using a Hub alone may cause problems with your Internest Service Provider. If however, the ISP will do DHCP then the Hub may work.
